AMD vs Intel CPUs: Which Is Best for Your Gaming PC?

When choosing a new gaming PC, one of the biggest decisions is usually AMD or Intel?

It is a debate that has been going on for decades, but the reality is that there is no single answer that suits everyone. Both AMD Ryzen and Intel Core processors have their advantages, and the best choice depends on your budget, what you use the PC for and how important future upgrades are to you.

There is another factor that has become increasingly important in 2026: the price of memory.

DDR5 prices have risen considerably as demand for DRAM has increased and manufacturers have prioritised memory production for servers and AI infrastructure. TrendForce reported that conventional DRAM contract prices were expected to increase by another 13–18% quarter-on-quarter during Q3 2026, following previous increases. Consumer memory supply remains tight and prices are historically high.

This has made the ability to build a PC using cheaper DDR4 memory much more relevant again — and it gives Intel's 12th, 13th and 14th Generation processors an interesting advantage over AMD's current AM5 platform.

So, which should you choose?


AMD Ryzen – Excellent Gaming Performance and a Long Upgrade Path

AMD's Ryzen processors have become extremely popular with gamers, and for good reason.

From relatively affordable Ryzen 5 processors through to AMD's gaming-focused X3D models, there is a Ryzen processor available for virtually every level of gaming PC.

One of AMD's biggest strengths is its AM5 platform.

AMD introduced AM5 alongside the Ryzen 7000 series and has continued using it with later generations. More importantly, AMD confirmed in 2026 that it intends to support the AM5 platform through 2029, giving buyers an unusually long potential CPU upgrade path.


The Advantages of AMD Ryzen

Excellent Gaming Performance

AMD's Ryzen processors offer extremely strong gaming performance, particularly its X3D processors.

AMD's 3D V-Cache technology gives these processors considerably more cache than conventional CPUs, something that can significantly improve performance in games that benefit from it.

For a system primarily designed around gaming, an X3D Ryzen processor can therefore be an extremely attractive choice.


A Very Strong Upgrade Path

This is possibly AMD's biggest platform advantage.

AM5 currently supports multiple generations of Ryzen processors, and AMD has extended its commitment to the socket through 2029.

That means someone purchasing an AM5 gaming PC today has the possibility of upgrading the processor several years down the line without necessarily replacing the motherboard and memory.

A BIOS update may sometimes be required depending on the motherboard and processor, but having that upgrade path available can substantially extend the useful life of a system.


Good Power Efficiency

AMD also offers some very capable processors without requiring excessive amounts of power.

This can mean:

  • Lower CPU temperatures

  • Less demanding cooling requirements

  • Lower system power consumption

  • Potentially quieter operation

Obviously this varies considerably between individual processors, but efficiency has become one of Ryzen's strengths.


Modern Platform Features

AM5 is designed as a modern platform and includes support for technologies such as DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0, although the exact PCIe configuration depends on the motherboard chipset being used.

For someone building a completely new PC and looking several years ahead, this makes AM5 particularly attractive.


The Downside of AM5: DDR5 Is Mandatory

There is, however, an increasingly important consideration.

AMD AM5 does not support DDR4.

If you want a current AM5 Ryzen system, you need DDR5 memory. AMD's current AM5 platform is specifically designed around DDR5.

Normally this might not seem particularly significant. DDR5 is newer and offers substantially greater memory bandwidth.

However, the memory market has changed considerably.


DDR5 Prices Have Increased

During 2026, DRAM prices have risen sharply, with demand from AI infrastructure and servers putting additional pressure on memory production and supply.

TrendForce reported record-high DRAM contract pricing during 2026 and continued price increases during Q3.

Recent module pricing data also demonstrates the current difference between DDR4 and DDR5. TrendForce's July 2026 module data showed the average spot price of a 16GB DDR5 UDIMM at 215, compared with 156 for a 16GB DDR4 UDIMM in the same dataset.

For a PC builder, this matters.

If you're building an AM5 PC you have no option to drop down to cheaper DDR4 memory to reduce the total cost.

A move from an older DDR4 system to AM5 also means replacing:

  • The processor

  • The motherboard

  • The memory

Even if your existing 16GB or 32GB DDR4 kit is perfectly usable.


Intel – DDR4 Support Has Become Valuable Again

Intel's 12th, 13th and 14th Generation Core processors have one feature that has become considerably more interesting following the recent memory price increases:

They support both DDR4 and DDR5.

Intel's 12th Generation processors support DDR4-3200 alongside DDR5, and the 13th and 14th Generation platforms continued that support. Intel's specifications for 14th Generation processors, for example, officially list support for DDR5 up to 5600 MT/s as well as DDR4 up to 3200 MT/s.

This allows a gaming PC to be built around a capable Intel processor while still using considerably cheaper DDR4 memory.


Intel's DDR4 Advantage

This can make a real difference when working to a fixed budget.

Imagine two gaming PCs with the same overall price.

One platform requires a more expensive DDR5 kit, while the other can use less expensive DDR4.

The money saved could instead go towards:

  • A faster graphics card

  • A larger SSD

  • A better power supply

  • More storage

  • Improved cooling

For gaming in particular, spending another £50 or £100 on the graphics card can often produce a much more noticeable difference than spending the same amount moving from DDR4 to DDR5.

That is why DDR4 still has a place in modern gaming PCs.


Existing DDR4 Can Also Be Reused

There is another potential saving for people upgrading an existing system.

If you already own a good quality 16GB or 32GB DDR4 kit, a compatible Intel 12th, 13th or 14th Generation motherboard can potentially allow you to reuse it.

Instead of buying CPU + motherboard + memory, you may only need to replace the processor and motherboard.

With today's higher DDR5 prices, that can significantly reduce the cost of an upgrade.

One Important Detail

Although Intel's processors support DDR4 and DDR5, the motherboard generally supports one or the other.

A DDR4 B760 motherboard, for example, uses DDR4.

A DDR5 B760 motherboard uses DDR5.

You cannot install DDR4 memory into a DDR5 motherboard or vice versa.

So you still need to choose which memory standard you want when selecting the motherboard.


Other Advantages of Intel

DDR4 compatibility isn't Intel's only advantage.

Strong Gaming and General Performance

Intel's 12th, 13th and 14th Generation processors remain very capable gaming CPUs.

Processors such as the Core i5 range can provide excellent gaming performance without requiring the cost of the highest-end CPUs.

That makes them particularly interesting when building a balanced gaming PC where the graphics card should receive a large proportion of the budget.


P-Cores and E-Cores

Many Intel processors use a combination of Performance Cores and Efficient Cores.

Performance Cores handle demanding workloads while Efficient Cores provide additional processing capacity for heavily threaded and background workloads.

This can be particularly useful for someone gaming while simultaneously running applications such as:

  • Discord

  • Web browsers

  • Streaming software

  • Recording software

  • Game launchers

  • Background applications

Not every Intel processor has E-Cores, but on models that do, the hybrid architecture provides plenty of multi-core capability.


Huge Choice of CPUs and Motherboards

Because LGA1700 covered three Intel Core generations, there is an enormous selection of processors and motherboards available.

12th, 13th and 14th Generation processors can be found across Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 and Core i9 ranges.

Intel's 14th Generation processors use LGA1700 and can work with compatible Intel 600- and 700-series motherboards, although older boards can require a BIOS update.

This can produce some excellent-value combinations, particularly when previous-generation processors are discounted.


What About Newer Intel Core Ultra CPUs?

Intel's newest desktop platforms have moved on from LGA1700 and the traditional Core i naming structure towards Intel Core Ultra.

These newer platforms are different.

The DDR4 advantage discussed here specifically applies to Intel's 12th, 13th and 14th Generation LGA1700 desktop processors.

So if you want the latest Intel platform, DDR5 is again part of the equation.

However, that doesn't suddenly make LGA1700 processors obsolete.

For a gaming PC where performance and overall system cost matter more than simply having the newest platform available, 12th–14th Generation Intel processors can still make a great deal of sense.


AMD vs Intel: Which Is Better for Gaming?

This is where it's important to look at the whole PC rather than one component.

A gaming PC isn't just a processor.

The CPU, graphics card, memory, storage, cooling and power supply all have to fit within the same budget.

For example, imagine you have a fixed budget and two choices:

System A

Depending on the game and resolution, System B could potentially deliver better gaming performance simply because more of the budget has been allocated to the graphics card.

On the other hand, if the budget allows a powerful GPU regardless of platform, an AMD X3D processor could provide excellent CPU-limited gaming performance while also giving you AM5's much longer future upgrade path.

Neither approach is automatically wrong.


AMD's Big Advantage: Future Upgrades

If you're buying a completely new gaming PC and intend to upgrade it several years into the future, AMD currently has a clear advantage.

AMD has committed to supporting AM5 through 2029, potentially allowing several future generations of processors to work with existing AM5 motherboards.

That makes it possible to buy something such as a Ryzen 5 today and potentially upgrade to a much faster Ryzen processor later while keeping the motherboard and DDR5 memory.

The initial platform cost may be higher, particularly while DDR5 prices remain elevated, but the longer-term upgrade potential can offset some of that cost.


Intel's Big Advantage: Lower-Cost DDR4 Builds

Intel takes almost the opposite approach with its 12th–14th Generation platform.

The future CPU upgrade path isn't as long as AM5 because newer Intel desktop processors have moved onto a different socket.

However, LGA1700 gives buyers something AMD's modern AM5 platform cannot:

The option to use DDR4.

And with current DDR5 prices considerably higher than they have previously been, that matters much more than it did when memory was cheap.

DDR4 provides:

  • Lower system cost

  • Plenty of performance for modern gaming

  • Huge availability of compatible motherboards and memory

  • The possibility of reusing existing RAM

  • More budget available for the graphics card

For an entry-level or mid-range gaming PC, those advantages can outweigh the benefits of DDR5.


Is DDR5 Actually Better Than DDR4?

Technically, yes.

DDR5 provides considerably higher potential memory bandwidth and is the memory standard that future platforms are being designed around.

But newer doesn't automatically mean better value for every PC.

Gaming performance depends heavily on the graphics card, and the difference between DDR4 and DDR5 isn't equivalent to simply doubling a benchmark number because the memory has a higher advertised speed.

The CPU, GPU, game engine, memory timings and resolution all influence the result.

This is why a well-balanced DDR4 gaming PC can still be an extremely sensible machine.

If using DDR4 saves enough money to move from one GPU class to the next, that can be a much better use of the budget.


Which Should You Choose?

AMD Ryzen Makes Sense If:

  • You want a modern AM5 platform

  • Future CPU upgrades are important

  • You want an AMD X3D gaming processor

  • You're building an entirely new system

  • You want the longer AM5 platform lifespan

  • You are happy to pay the additional cost of DDR5

Intel 12th–14th Gen Makes Sense If:

  • You want strong gaming performance

  • You want to keep the overall build price down

  • You want the option of cheaper DDR4 memory

  • You already own DDR4 that you could reuse

  • You want to spend more of the budget on the graphics card

  • You've found a particularly good-value LGA1700 CPU and motherboard combination


DDR4 Isn't Dead Yet

It is easy to assume that because DDR5 is newer, every gaming PC should automatically use it.

That simply isn't the case.

DDR5 is the future, but DDR4 remains perfectly capable of powering a modern gaming PC, and the considerable rise in DDR5 pricing has made DDR4's lower cost relevant again.

That is particularly beneficial for Intel's 12th, 13th and 14th Generation platforms.

Being able to pair a modern multi-core Intel processor with inexpensive DDR4 memory means more of the budget can be spent where it matters most.

And for many gaming PCs, that's the graphics card.


Don't Buy a Brand – Buy the Right System

The AMD vs Intel argument often becomes unnecessarily tribal.

Both companies make excellent processors.

AMD's strengths include exceptional gaming-focused X3D processors, strong efficiency and an AM5 platform that AMD now intends to support through 2029.

Intel's 12th–14th Generation strengths include excellent all-round performance, a huge choice of CPUs and motherboards and, importantly, the ability to use either DDR4 or DDR5.

With DDR5 prices having risen considerably during 2026, that DDR4 compatibility has arguably become more useful, not less.

For a higher-budget PC designed with future processor upgrades in mind, AMD AM5 can be the obvious choice.

For a price-conscious gaming build where using cheaper DDR4 allows a greater proportion of the budget to be spent on the graphics card, Intel can make just as much sense.
